Bruce Pearson with hMa : Contains Real Hard Won Insights

date: 2012

This work is a collaboration between New York City based artist Bruce Pearson and hanrahan Meyers architects. The piece spells out the phrase Contains Real Hard Won Insights, which is also its title. hMa assisted Bruce by scaling his text design, normally placed within the context of a painting, and developing it into a large spiral-shaped sculpture: two 7′ tall arcs that visitors will be able to walk into and around (see diagram). hMa built a scale model of the installation (see photos). The full-scale sculpture has not yet been built, but will be approximately 90 inches tall, and constructed from laser cut, baked enamel-finished steel. ‘Contains Real Hard Won Insights’ is an 8-foot high, painted steel, freestanding text labyrinth that can be set within any type of environment. The structure as a labyrinth was inspired by the concept of the intersection of architecture, sculpture and painting, though its open construction suggests a more nuanced experience of both the work itself and the environment around it. Moving through a labyrinth implies a linear experience—a narrative that leads to the center. With ‘Insights,’ however, a person can walk the linear path while simultaneously experiencing the surrounding environment being reframed before their eyes. ‘Contains Real Hard Won Insights’ is a self-enacting text that gives the viewer an opportunity to move from one point of a narrative to another, and meditate on the entwinement of beginnings, ends, and anticipation.
